Hyperpigmentation refers to patches of skin that become darker than the surrounding areas of skin. Burns, bruises, acne, rashes or other trauma to skin can cause it to produce more melanin and lead to dark spots. Common cause for hyper pigmentation is excess production of melanin which is a pigment that gives skin its colour. Hyper pigmentation is obvious in areas of skin exposed to skin such as face, neck and hands, in the areas of friction such as elbows and knees. Melasma is a common condition noticed in females who have pitta dosha abnormality. Any condition related to the skin will have Brajaka pitta involvement.
